coin de lecture/reading corner
I believe reading is the key to success. In French immersion, your child has the extra challenge of reading in a second language. Most of the students do not enjoy this part of their studies because their reading level is lower than their ability in English. Unfortunately, lack of reading in French perpetuates this problem - the less they read, the less they are comfortable with correct sentence structure, vocabulary and ultimately comprehension. When they do not understand, they do not want to read.
As a school we are focusing on literacy. We want to stir the passion of reading in all the students that cross our paths. I will try to do this by reading to the students, asking them to read A LOT and than share what they loved or did not like about what they read. We have set up a common reading/literacy block within the school. We will be teaching reading strategies as well as reading. This time will also be a time to be excited about the books we are reading. If you want to join in, pick up a book, read with your child and talk about books!!
